Taking a tour of an assisted living facility for yourself or a loved one is an excellent time to ask thoughtful questions to ensure it meets your needs.   But also to get a feel of the culture of the building. Questions To Ask:

1.Tell me about your staffing, you have Registered Nurses?  How often are they there, what is your staff to resident ratio

2. How do you bill, is it levels? Packages?  A la carte for each service?  Do you prebill?

3. How do you handle pendant calls, is there a time that a call is answered and do you charge for this in addition to the package or level?

4. How do you handle medical emergencies?  

5. Is there a physician’s group that rounds routinely? 

6. What are the activities in the building

7. Do you have printed menus? 

Observations to make while taking a tour:

  1.  Do staff smile and introduce themselves or is the tour guide introducing you?
  2. Do other residents appear to be clean and dressed appropriately, do they seem happy and engaged?
  3. Are there smells in the building that concern you?
  4. Do you see activities in common areas or groups of residents engaging in something? 

Items to bring with you for your nursing assessment or prior to a move in:

  1. A list of all your medications you are taking-DO NOT forget over the counter medications such as vitamins, aspirin, tums, Tylenol as it is important they know every medication.
  2. A list of all your physicians, primary, eye doctor, dentist
  3. A copy of your POLST, Health Care Directive, Power of Attorney
  4. I always recommend having your preferred funeral home listed even if you don’t have it planned yet
  5. Your preferred pharmacy
